The Montessori Philosophy

What is Montessori?

Named for Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy's first female doctor, a Montessori education focuses on cultivating a child's natural curiosity and desire to learn. The Montessori materials have been carefully designed to appeal to the child's developmental needs in early childhood and beyond. The Montessori philosophy encourages children to make connections between themselves and the natural world.

In a Montessori classroom and at San Juan Montessori:

  • Children learn at their own pace in a noncompetitive environment.

  • The classroom is a prepared environment with a variety of hands-on materials which help children learn through experience and investigation.

  • Children collaborate and work together, as well as work independently.

  • Teachers can recognize and take advantage of different learning styles.

  • Teachers/Guides and Assistants "Follow The Child".

Time spent in the outdoors and appreciating nature is a large part of the Montessori philosophy. Children at San Juan Montessori enjoy lots of time outside in local parks and at the beach. Late spring and summer beach exploration is a favorite.
